NBA Players: Startling Five

NBA Players: Startling Five

It’s always fun to see players overachieving. The high numbers that some players are accumulating in the early stages of the season are impossible to ignore. You won’t see these players at the top of those “preseason ranking” lists but deserve to be there now. Can they maintain this level of play? At least five players are already forcing fans to say “Wow! Where did that come from?” in the first four weeks of NBA action.

Al Horford

With five double-doubles and 19 blocks in his first six games, Horford brought back memories of his time with the Atlanta Hawks when he was an All-Star and kept making the playoffs. While it’s encouraging for a 35-year-old to have this kind of start, fans are expecting his production to eventually come back down to earth. At least he can say that he was a “Top Ten” player at one point in time this year.

Kyle Kuzma

Very quietly, Kuzma is off to an encouraging start for the Washington Wizards. He even had a 17-point, 17-rebound, two-block performance against the Boston Celtics. He is quickly making fans forget about his bone-headed plays last year by putting up decent numbers in scoring and rebounding. He’s a big part of why the Wizards are number one in the east as of November 16. Kuzma is already making the Los Angeles Lakers, his former team, miss him.

Franz Wagner

Among rookies, Wagner could easily be forgotten because of all the other big names out there. That’s no longer the case. He’s been on everyone’s radar ever since he erupted for 28 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wagner has scored in double figures in 11 of his first 14 games. He’s also quite lucky to play for the Orlando Magic with his older brother Moritz and we’re sure that the older Wagner doesn’t mind that he’s being outplayed by his younger sibling right now.

Miles Bridges

If you joined NBA Fantasy League last month, Bridges was a name that did not appear in your “players to get” list. No one thought that a breakout campaign was possible this year. The first three players you think of when talking about the Charlotte Hornets would be LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward, and Terry Rozier but Bridges already outscored them during the team’s first 15 games.

Davion Mitchell

Mitchell was already getting attention for his play during NBA Summer League. Now he’s making the highlight reels in almost every game. He even has defensive highlight plays. That’s rare for a rookie. Star players of the opposing team seem to have a hard time dribbling or scoring when guarded by Mitchell. It looks like the Sacramento Kings made the right decision when they drafted him.

Trending or Ending?

It’s only been a month since the season started but some general managers in the NBA Fantasy world are already celebrating the players they picked or kicking themselves over the players they didn’t pick. When players get off to a hot start, they get talked about a lot. Now we have to see if this trend is something that’s real or something that will fade away.
