Tyler Herro was huge for the Miami Heat during their 2020 playoff run in the bubble. In the first three rounds of the playoffs, Herro averaged 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on 46/38/90 shooting splits. However, he took a step back the season after. Yes, the season scoring average went up to 15 points per game. But, his shooting dipped from 38.9 to 36 percent. He turned the ball over more and his defense regressed further. There were even times where he was unplayable down the stretch.

After a full offseason, Herro has been hot in the preseason. In five preseason games, the Heat guard averaged 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists while shooting 51 percent from the field and a blistering 45 percent from three-point range. Herro appears to be back to the player Miami wanted when they drafted him. He’s attacking the rim more and showing more confidence in his shooting. His playmaking seems to be improving as well. Take a look at this hit-ahead pass to Jimmy Butler.

Herro credits his added 10 pounds of muscle as a reason for his early success as he told the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman.

“I mean it feels good, a lot of hard work this offseason.” “We’ve got a great group of guys, just feeding life into me, really putting me in positions to be successful, whether it’s the coaching staff or the players around me. So just continuing to work and one day at a time.”

The Heat guard recently said in an interview that he believed he is in the same class as Luka Doncic, Trae Young, and Ja Morant. Later on, he clarified that he was chasing those guys and not on the same level. While many will agree he’s not on the same level, Herro is ready to prove his doubters wrong, and he’s off to a good start. He’s more focused and engaged on both ends of the floor. Most importantly, he has a defined role as the team’s sixth man. Now, it’s time to prove it once the real games start this week. Miami’s season begins this Thursday against the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks.
