Heller's Verdicts: 3 Burning Questions Answered - New York Jets

Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those queries for the New York Jets

What will Darnold’s third season look like?

Year three for quarterback Sam Darnold was yet another inconsistent one. He missed a handful of games for Gang Green and veteran Joe Flacco got several starts in his place. The receiving corps struggled to stay healthy for most of the season, which didn’t help Darnold’s cause or his further development.

New head coach Robert Saleh will need to decide if the former USC signal-caller is his quarterback going forward, or if he wants to use the team’s second-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on a replacement. The team could also address the position via trade or free agency.

A future Hall of Famer as part of their rushing attack?

Frank Gore tallied over 650 yards and two touchdowns on 187 carries in his 16th NFL season. He also moved into third place on the career rushing yards list, passing Barry Sanders and trailing only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton

In a late-season interview, Gore commented on his team’s disappointing year and his inevitable retirement.

“You don’t want to go 0-16, especially if this is my last year,” said Gore, who trails only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton for the most rushing yards in NFL history. “I can’t go out like that.”

Early indications are that Gore will likely don pads and a helmet in 2021 for year 17, but that helmet may not have a Jets logo on it.

Is Adam Gase sitting on the hottest hot seat in the NFL?

It was believed that Gase was on a very short leash this season before it even began. As the dismal 2-14 campaign played out (including an 0-13 start), it became increasingly expected the coach would be fired by midseason at the latest. Surprisingly, Gase made it through the season and was relieved of his duties shortly after it’s conclusion.
