Why the Mets Should Be In No Rush to Replace Brodie Van Wagenen

Within hours of Steve Cohen officially taking over as the owner of the New York Mets, he cleaned house. But that doesn’t mean he has to fill it back up right now.

Cohen isn’t messing around. Less than three hours after he officially took over as the boss of the Mets, nearly the entire baseball leadership team was out of a job. This included Brodie Van Wagenen, Allard Baird, Omar Minaya, Adam Guttridge, and Jared Banner.

But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mets need to fill those chairs right now.

Sandy Alderson is the team’s president, and he knows the Mets organization front and backward. He will have no problem making all of the decisions on the roster construction, especially when his boss has $14 billion.

There’s one main reason why the Mets shouldn’t force themselves to hire new baseball operations leadership. Theo Epstein.

Epstein’s contract is up with the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 2021 season and it looks like Chicago won’t want to pay him a lot of money to stay so they’ll give the reigns to current general manager Jed Hoyer. Epstein is going to the Hall of Fame when he retires as one of the best executives in baseball history. He not only ended the Boston Red Sox’s 86-year drought in 2004, but won another World Series in 2007. He also ended the Cubs’ 108-year drought in 2016.

Up next could be ending the Mets championship drought. Epstein is going to be sought after among nearly all big league organizations because of his greatness, but Cohen obviously has the money to lure Epstein to come to New York. If Epstein doesn’t want to come, then it isn’t a big deal. Alderson and Cohen could then just revert back to some of their initial candidates they are thinking about this offseason to replace Van Wagenen.

The Mets might have rushed Van Wagenen out in a matter of hours. But, they might want to think about waiting to fill his chair until next winter.
