Jett Lawrence Supercross Indianapolis

After the madness that happened last weekend in Detroit, Supercross made its annual stop to the racing capital of the world in Indianapolis. Eli Tomac entered Saturday in complete control of the 450 points race, up over 40 points on second place. Jett Lawrence meanwhile kept the train rolling with his third win of the year last weekend as well.

Injury Report

Last night, three of the four riders who got banged up in Detroit lined up for the 450 class this week. Surprisingly, the one rider who didn’t was Dylan Ferrandis, who was not in either of the major incidents last week. You could see him favoring his hand once he retired last week, and the Frenchman indeed have a hand injury that forced him out for the week. Specifically a bone bruise. A disappointing season for the second year 450 rider sadly comes to ahead here. Chase Sexton, Cooper Webb, and Jason Anderson meanwhile were all good to go.

Heat Racing Recap

250 East Class

Cameron McAdoo started off the evening with a strong holeshot, with a few riders going down behind him in the middle of the start. One of them for sure was Phil Nicoletti, who was down upwards of 30 seconds once timing and scoring got situated. Eventually, he along with Lane Shaw pulled off to get a headstart on LCQ prep. Back up front meanwhile, R.J. Hampshire was the only rider inside of two seconds of McAdoo. That gap further increased as McAdoo picked up an easy Heat Race win.

Holeshot in Heat 2 went to Kyle Chisholm by the looks of it. However, the big story was Lawrence flying off the bike after a collision into turn one. The good news was that he was ok and made up a ton of time to give himself a shot to transfer. Chiz meanwhile gave up the lead to Pierce Brown. However, he took a nasty spill in the whoops and out, for the time being, giving the win to Chiz. Well, he would of, if Lawrence didn’t barnstorm his way from 18th to 1st.

450 Class

Vince Friese picked up the first 450 Class holeshot, but he would get by on the first lap in third. That was because both Marvin Musquin and Anderson got by, with the latter taking the lead early. Sexton meanwhile went down early, luckily however this was nowhere near as bad as last week, and he lost little to no time as a result. All business meanwhile for El Hombre, who didn’t miss a beat in a dominant Heat Race win.

Mookie Fever continues to take over this country of ours, as Malcolm Stewart, after a brief battle with Webb, took hold of the early lead in Heat 2. Justin Barcia also was able to make it by Webb, with Tomac in fourth early. Further on back, Alex Ray and Devin Raper got tangled in mid-air, before proceeding to engage in fisticuffs off to the side of the track. Meanwhile, Bam Bam got by Mookie for the lead while no one was looking, and that ended up being for the win.

250 East Class Roundup

No. 18 Jett Lawrence – Honda HRC (1st Place)

A big win last night for Lawrence, who takes a 4-for-5 run into this two-week break for the 250 East Class. His speed became abundantly clear when he made up 17 spots in his Heat, and the Main Event was no different. After swapping the lead with McAdoo, Lawrence rode off into the sunset once he made his last pass for position of the evening. Heading into St. Louis, his points lead over McAdoo now sits at 11 points as well.

No. 48 Cameron McAdoo – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki (2nd Place)

Can’t get on McAdoo that hard, he had a very good night all things considered. Him being able to at least get by Lawrence and hold the lead in the Main Event for a bit should be a nice confidence booster for the Iowa native. Furthermore, he joins his title rival still as the only two riders to podium in every 250 East round so far. With all that said, an answer from McAdoo at St. Louis would be great for his title hopes.

No. 44 Pierce Brown – Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing (4th Place)

The GasGas squad should be proud of the effort their 250 East rider put on last night. After his brutal Heat Race wreck, Brown picked himself off the deck, won the LCQ, then proceeded to finish one spot off the podium in the Main Event. No bonus points for the effort sadly, but this was an impressive showing from the Utah native for sure.

No. 715 Phil Nicoletti – Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha (DNQ)

Not the night that Filthy Phil was looking for at all. After getting taken out of his Heat literal seconds in, Nicoletti was by default forced into the LCQ. There, he would be in a good spot to transfer late but was bumped out of a spot by Hardy Munoz, ending his evening. Tough break for the veteran, as this all started by something out of his control. Sometimes though, that’s just how it works.

450 Class Roundup

No. 3 Eli Tomac – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha (1st Place)

Four in a row, six of the last eight, and now 43 total career Main Event wins for Tomac. The possibility that he clinches this title multiple rounds early increased on Saturday as well. With Stewart and Anderson having finishes outside the top five, the lead currently sits at 48 points. An additional eight points would secure him a two-round points advantage on the dot, putting him on pace to clinch the title in Foxborough at the earliest. Also, with Tomac picking up Supercross win No. 43, he is now one back of Chad Reed for fourth all-time.

No. 25 Marvin Musquin – Red Bull KTM (3rd Place)

Don’t know what it is about Musquin and Indianapolis, but he always seems to run well there. Last night was no exception, as the Frenchman put it on the box for just the second time all year. There was a stretch where it felt like he was going to maybe even win as well. He looked very sporty around midway through the Main Event, but couldn’t capitalize on it once he hit third. Great night for Musquin regardless, you never know, this could have been his last podium if this is indeed his swan song.

No. 21 Jason Anderson – Monster Energy Kawasaki (6th Place)

Anderson, who was leading the field for the early portion of the Main, got taken out of the lead by a kill shot pass by Barcia. A shame, but Anderson has been on the other side of this incident a few times this year as well. The speed was there through the day and he still brought it home in sixth. However, his hopes of a second Supercross Championship are on a standing eight count.

No. 27 Malcolm Stewart – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing (8th Place)

Mookie was in line for a possible podium result, but a brutal-looking late crash changed things. Luckily, Stewart was ok, and furthermore, with all the riders that were lapped, he lost two or three spots at the absolute most. Good job to salvage what could have been much worse in any case, as Stewart’s quest to finish second in points continues.
