Alperen Sengun is one of the most polarizing prospects in the draft. Many scouts are enamored by his post-scoring ability and offensive upside. Others are worried about his defense and lack of athleticism in the ‘modern NBA’. Let’s take a look at the skillset of the Turkish prospect.

Defense (16/30)

Sengun is an average defender. He often loses positioning and can be prone to gambling for a block or a steal rather than finding good positioning and contesting shots. He struggled against taller players in the post as well as they were able to put up shots over him without much challenge.

Finishing/Post Scoring (15/15)

Sengun is one of the best post-scorers in the 2021 NBA Draft. He is a powerful big who can use his weight to gain better positioning in the post and score. He also is patient and possesses a variety of post moves that he utilizes well to score.

Rebounding (15/15)

Sengun is a terrific rebounder as well. He uses his size well to pick up rebounds. Sengun averaged 9.4 rebounds per game in the Turkish league, 4.1 of them being offensive rebounds. He is a constant threat for putback buckets on offense.

Pick and Roll or Pop (9/10)

Sengun is very good at drawing attention to himself in the post so when he rolls to the rim, naturally the defense collapses in on him leaving open shots for others. He is also able to shoot the ball, although he was very ineffective from beyond the arc in Turkey, making him a challenge to defend in the pick-and-roll or pop.

Athleticism (6/10)

Sengun is not very athletic. He often gambles on defense and can not regain positioning due to his lack of athleticism. He is, however, a big center so he uses his mass well to make up for his lack of athleticism.

Frame/Size (4.5/5)

Sengun is a bulky center. He uses his weight tremendously in the paint on offense. The only knock for him is that he is a bit undersized at the center position being 6’10”.

Perimeter Shooting (3/5)

Sengun shot an abysmal 19 percent from beyond the arc, however, there is an upside to his shooting ability. He is a very good free-throw shooter. Sengun shot 81.2 percent from the free-throw line and often good free-throw shooters succeed from beyond the arc. If Sengun can improve his shooting ability, his offensive game could be as good as NBA superstars such as Nikola Jokic.

Mid-Range Shooting (3.75/5)

Sengun improved in the mid-range throughout his time playing professionally so far. He is a good free-throw shooter suggesting that he is comfortable in the mid-range when given time. Sengun did not attempt many mid-range jumpers, but he has potential in this area moving forward.

Injury (4.75/5)

Sengun has not suffered a major injury yet only a couple of minor ones. Injury is not a concern for him right now.

Bonus: Potential (+4.75/5)

Sengun has one of the highest ceilings in this draft. His lack of defensive upside could limit his ceiling, but his offense has the potential to be on the level of NBA superstars.

Player Summary

Sengun has a well-rounded offensive game which makes him draw comparisons to many NBA superstars. His defense and lack of athleticism could limit him when playing at the next level, but if Sengun can knock down the three-ball consistently, he has the talent to become an all-star in the NBA.

Final Grade (81.75/100): Top-10 Pick
