I don’t know if it was just me, but week seven felt weird. Lots of stuff happened on the offensive side that you just can’t explain. Patrick Mahomes suffered a knee injury that had fantasy owners gasping for air like a punch to the gut. Though it seems he will only miss a few weeks. Alvin Kamara didn’t play and if you didn’t stash Latavius Murray, you felt the pain from that. Then the David Johnson debacle, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury came out after the game infuriating DJ owners saying he was only going to be used in “emergency” situations. So, Chase Edmonds had a career day while he sat on many benches like mine.
Now with all the craziness, my IDP leagues kept me somewhat sane, in light of losing my shares of Kamara or Johnson with his two rushing yards. The other side of the ball performed rather well. I hope they did it for you too! Being halfway into the season, injuries flaring up and players earning their shares to stay on the field should be established. Before I get to my IDP guys I like for the week, let’s recap last week’s players.
The two that didn’t show up Sunday were my sleeper Jerry Hughes who only recovered a fumble while his counterpart rookie Ed Oliver recorded his first career sack and two tackles. Quinton Dunbar who only managed a single tackle and a pass defended, but pretty sure the weather was to blame on that one. On the bright side, Troy Reeder continues to perform in Clay Matthew’s role with a nice six tackles (two solo and one tackle for loss) and a forced fumble. Then with the blowout Monday night with the Jets, John Simon racked up three tackles (one solo), a sack, and a forced fumble. If both Reeder and Simon see the snaps consistently, they can continue to produce plug and play numbers. Now on to week eight!
Defensive Line
Yannick Ngakoue, Jacksonville Jaguars
Ngakoue has seen a nice chunk of the teams snaps his last two of the three games and it clearly shows when he gets time on the field. In that time, about 90 percent of snaps (58 and 65), he’s managed to get six tackles, two sacks, an interception, and turned that interception into a touchdown. In the other game where he only had 43 snaps, he only made one single tackle. So, when he gets the volume his numbers reflect it. Look forward to Sunday and he gets the Jets who had a very rough night Monday with the Patriots. They give up the most fantasy points to defensive ends and that’s where Ngakoue lines up.
Linebacker
Zach Cunningham, Houston Texans
I’ll keep this short and sweet, though Cunningham has been quiet as of late after his 14-tackle game week four. Only managing six tackles week five, five tackles week six, and seven tackles week seven. He will look to get back to double-digit tackles Sunday against an Oakland Raiders team that in their last two weeks have given up 61 tackles to the position, including 16 to Packers’ linebacker Blake Martinez last week. I like this matchup for the Texans’ lead tackler in 2018.
Defensive Back
Terrell Edmunds, Pittsburgh Steelers
Earlier into the season, I was high on Minkah Fitzpatrick with him getting traded to the Steelers and it paid dividends. With Fitzpatrick feeding off Edmunds, it seems Edmunds could be doing the same off opposing teams’ game-planning of Fitzpatrick. Though he is without an interception this year, Edmunds does have 42 tackles. With a more than a generous matchup with Miami on Sunday, the Dolphins have seven turnovers between Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick over in their last four games. Also, the Dolphins have given up an average of 33 tackles to defensive backs during that span. Edmunds is in line for a potentially good game.
Sleeper
Marquise Blair, DB, Seattle Seahawks
This one is a definite roll of the dice, I say that because if Bradley McDougal is out like he was last week, Blair will be in line for another start. The rookie safety had a very nice day in his debut with eight tackles and a pass defended. He played 100% of the snaps and looked to be in mid-season form. Now with a date with the Falcons, who have been horrid this season, he looks to have another good game. The Falcons in 2019 have allowed 233 tackles to defensive backs and given up at least 14 big plays. If he gets the same volume with another start, look for him to perform again.
