Brian Cashman hinted that longtime starter Masahiro Tanaka won’t be returning to the Bronx this winter, but there is still some good news for Yankees fans.
The Yankees GM seemed to suggest on Thursday that the team is likely not going to be able to sign Tanaka in free agency. According to Brendan Kuty (NJ.com, The Star-Ledger), Cashman told YES Network that he cited “rules prohibiting eliminating market for free agents when [he was] asked about Tanaka.”
In other words, Cashman is telling the media that they cannot actually say in public that Tanaka is not in their plans.
The good news for Yankees fans, though, is DJ LeMahieu is in their plans. Cashman said on Thursday that he is working on a deal with their free agent second baseman.
“We have had discussions, and our intent is there. Obviously we have good intentions when it comes to LeMahieu and trying to re-sign him, and I think he has the same on his end.”
Reporters around the game are expecting LeMahieu to demand about $20 million over four or five seasons. The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays presume to be the Yankees’ main competition, but if Cashman is already essentially ruling out Tanaka, then their full focus is on LeMahieu and they should be the favorites to sign him.
LeMahieu was just named to the All-MLB Team at second base after finishing in the top three for the American League Most Valuable Player award that went to Chicago’s Jose Abreu.
