The summer’s biggest WWE event took place on Aug. 23 and featured some of the biggest names in the company wrestling in some of the highest stakes.
Championship gold was on the line, family lineage was and one loser must leave the company only glosses the surface to the bright card that serves SummerSlam 2020.
Here are three takeaways from WWE’s latest pay-per-view:

Roman Reigns returns
WWE has been promoting the tagline “You’ll Never See It Coming” during the build to SummerSlam. There could have been a number of angles the company went with such a tease, and it really did turn out to be something most did not expect.
The Big Dog made his return to WWE at the close of the show shortly after The Fiend captured the Universal Championship. Reigns attacked both Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, even dishing out chair shots to the latter.
Originally booked to take on Goldberg for the same title at WrestleMania 36, Reigns had to drop out and take time off from the company at the onset of the pandemic because of health concerns surrounding the virus and his history with leukemia.
Reigns’ return gives WWE a fresh face to put on the scene, and it looks like he will be spending time on SmackDown on FOX to capture the Universal Championship like he thought he would earlier in the year. But, there still is one more thing to consider…
Perhaps Reigns is the leader of Retribution?

Drew McIntyre retains…cleanly
The two most dominant male superstars in WWE clashed with the WWE Championship in both of their sights.
Challenger Randy Orton and champion Drew McIntyre put on a show during their match. Both wound up bloodied with cuts on their heads as a result of their damage to one another.
It was when Orton looked to deliver an RKO that it went south for The Viper. McIntyre countered with a back-to-back roll-up pin to emerge victorious.
There had been speculation that perhaps the finish of the match would not have been clean to preserve the momentum for either one or both superstars. With the clean finish, there is a clear sense of direction.
However, Payback is now just six days away. Does Orton get a rematch?

The Golden Role Models drop a belt
Turning from the most dominant male superstars to the two most commanding women in WWE, ex-Raw Women’s Champion Sasha Banks and SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley (both of whom also are Women’s Tag Team champions) took on Asuka with both putting their singles titles on the line.
Bayley survived her match with Asuka and retained her title atop the women’s division on the blue brand. The Boss could not say the same.
Banks’ finish to the match was surprising. Asuka executed an Asuka Lock to which Banks submitted.
As such with WWE, rumors and ideas have swirled that perhaps a strain in the relationship between Banks and Bayley would cause one of the two to lose their singles title as a result of the irresponsibility of their friend, but it did not seem the case here.
Seeing as the last two takeaways ended with a question in turn, where do Banks and Bayley go from here? Does Banks get a rematch? Does this put a sort of jealousy-led fracture in the connection between the WWE Women’s Tag Team champions?
