Why the Cleveland Browns Should Trade Odell Beckham, Jr. After Season Ends

With the Cleveland Browns being 5-7 and out of the playoff picture, there are rumors that wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. wants out of Cleveland.

Beckham is in his first season with the Browns after the New York Giants traded him to Cleveland. In 12 games, he has 57 catches for 805 yards and just two touchdowns. On Thursday, he was asked if he wanted to be in Cleveland next year and didn’t give a clear answer.

“No one knows what the future holds, like tomorrow,” Beckham said, through ESPN’s Jake Trotter. “I couldn’t tell you what’s going to happen. I couldn’t sit here and tell you whether I’m going to be here, want to be here, don’t want to be here. This is exactly where I’m at now, and I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.”

On Friday, Beckham tweeted that he wasn’t saying that he wanted out of Cleveland, but that he did want better results.

However, that contradicts what FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on NFL Sunday.

“Here’s the thing. People are now surprised about what’s happening and what he’s saying in Cleveland, but players around the league and coaches, they’re not. Let me fill you in why: because, throughout this year, Odell Beckham has actually told other players and coaches before games [and] during, ‘Hey, come get me, come get me,” Glazer reported.

If Beckham was telling other players and coaches to come to get him, then he definitely wants out of Cleveland. While it seems like Beckham wants to be traded, the Browns don’t seem to want to be trading him when the trading period opens back up.

“[The Browns’ official] laughed at me, basically. He’s not going anywhere,” ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said on SportsCenter on Monday.

The Browns might not want to trade Beckham, but there is a reason why they would want to. Beckham is under contract through 2023 but he’s earned most of the guaranteed money in his deal. That means that if the Browns do part with him, then they won’t have any dead money on their cap after this season.

The Browns should trade Beckham. It’s obvious that he wants out and isn’t happy (although he hasn’t admitted it). He also hasn’t played very well this season, probably because he has been playing all season with a hernia-related injury. Cleveland should trade Beckham because it makes no sense to keep him if he’s not happy … and it appears that he’s not.

So, where would OBJ go if he were to be traded? The San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots seem to be two possibilities. However, we don’t know where Odell would want to go and what teams are interested in him, so we’ll have to wait and see.
