Before choosing a quarterback for 2019 the Cardinals need to find out who will be catching the ball.
The Arizona Cardinals’ recent flurry of free agency activity has not included help at the wide receiver position.
It can’t be denied that the Cardinals have addressed some glaring needs during the first week of free agency. However, despite the front office’s proactive ways, there is still one position that could still use some help.
One glaring weakness of the Cardinals in 2018 was the wide receiver spot. Sure, the fact that the great Larry Fitzgerald has decided to return is a wonderful thing. In today’s pass-happy NFL, however, having a collection of quality pass-catchers is almost a necessity.
In all fairness, 22-year old Christian Kirk performed well as a rookie receiver last season. The Arizona native’s first professional campaign would have been even more impressive if not for the broken foot he suffered in Week 13.
The options that remain beyond Fitzgerald and Kirk are less than impressive. Chad Williams has caught just 20 passes in two years, while Pharoh Cooper is known more for his kick-returning skills.
The Cardinals did ink Kevin White to a one-year contract this past Thursday. Unfortunately, the former No. 7 selection of the 2015 draft has done little to justify his being a top-10 pick.
The free agent options are getting thin. Most of the premium wide receivers have already found homes, but a few good ones are still available.
A couple of former Green Bay Packers may deserve a look. Jordy Nelson has tallied 613 receptions and 72 touchdowns since he entered the league in 2008. Randall Cobb, a second-round selection in 2011, has hauled in 470 balls for 5,524 yards and 41 trips to the end zone during his career.
Former 49ers first-round pick Michael Crabtree has 634 catches and 54 touchdowns in 10 pro seasons. Meanwhile, Chris Hogan, who has spent the last three years with the New England Patriots, could also be a good fit.
The first wave of free agency has come to an end. The Cardinals have certainly added some valuable pieces to the roster, but holes remain. Here’s to hoping that help for the wide receiver room is just around the corner.
