Steve Cohen was introduced as the owner of the New York Mets on Tuesday, and he said numerous things that should make their fans smile ear to ear.
Cohen is most widely known for his net worth of $14 billion and his Mets fandom, but he put a face to it on Tuesday in his first official remarks as the owner of the Mets. He said a few notable things that should make Mets fans happy that he was chosen by the Wilpon family to be the next leader of the organization.
Cohen is going to spend (wisely)
Cohen said he will spend like he is the owner of a New York sports team and not like the owner of the Kansas City Royals, something the previous regime did not do. “I promise you we will act like a major market team. Will we act like drunken sailors on the market? No.”
While Mets fans want Cohen to go out and get every big name on the free-agent market, he realizes that in order to have sustained success, the organization needs to only spend when they need to. “I’m not in this for a short term fix. I’m in this to build a sustainable franchise. I don’t want to be good one year and bad for three years.”
He is doing it for the fans
When Cohen was asked what his main purpose for buying the team was, he said “I’m doing it for the fans. I can make millions of people happy, and what an unbelievable opportunity that is. I’m not trying to make money here… it’s really about building something great, building something for the fans, winning.”
He wants to win now
Cohen said throughout his Zoom press conference that he is taking over as the owner of the Mets because he wants to win the World Series. Perhaps the most notable quote from Cohen’s press conference was the timetable of winning and the high expectations he put on himself. “If I don’t win a World Series in the next 3-5 years – and I’d like to make it sooner – that will be slightly disappointing”
Everyone has heard the saying ‘You can only make one first impression’. Cohen made a stellar first impression and made fans believe their favorite team is going to be back in October not just sometime in the next couple of years, but for many years to come.
