Late Monday night, the Chicago White Sox upgraded their rotation by acquiring Lance Lynn from the Texas Rangers. In return, Texas will receive Dane Dunning and Avery Weems. Lynn will be joining a White Sox rotation that includes Lucas Giolito, Dallas Keuchel, and Dylan Cease. The move is a significant addition for the White Sox as Lynn was one of the most coveted arms on the market.
Lynn initially joined the Rangers before 2019 on a three-year deal that has worked out brilliantly for Texas. Over the past two years, Lynn holds a record of 22-14 with a 3.57 ERA. He also struck out 335 batters in that span, including a career-high 246 in 2019. In 2020, the veteran starter led the league with 84 innings pitched. While the Rangers failed to make the playoffs, Lynn continued to have a career revival.

This is the type of trade that is truly good for both sides.#ChangeTheGame | #MLB https://t.co/ysvVmgJohm

The White Sox are parting with two young pitchers in Dunning and Weems. Dunning is a former top-100 prospect and got his first taste of major league action in 2020. The Florida native was impressive as in seven starts, posting a 3.97 ERA. He struck out 35 batters in 34 innings of work and picked up his first two major league wins.
Unlike Dunning, Weems has yet to appear in the majors but is a talented arm. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 draft and made nine appearances in the minors that year. In Weems’ first year of pro ball, he struck out 74 batters and pitched to a 2.09 ERA.

With the deal official, it appears even for both clubs. Lynn gets a chance to pitch for a playoff-caliber team, and the Rangers were able to add two talented arms to the system. The Rangers also have Dunning under club control through 2026, and Lynn will be a free agent next season. The offseason has only just begun, but the Rangers and White Sox have made one of the biggest trades so far.
