What Klay Thompson's injury means for the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors confirmed on Thursday that guard Klay Thompson will be out for the 2020-21 season.

Thompson suffered a season-ending tear to his right Achilles tendon on Wednesday during a workout, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He was playing with other NBA players in Los Angeles when he got injured.

This will be the second consecutive season that Thompson won’t play. He missed this past season due to recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee.

Thompson being out for another season is a huge loss for the Warriors. He is a five-time All-Star and helped the Warriors win three NBA championships in five NBA Finals appearances.

So what does this mean for the Warriors? First, it means that they need someone to fill Thompson’s spot. Warriors general manager Bob Myers said Wednesday night that he’d been given the green light to use the $17 million trade exception they got in 2019, according to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.

It appears that they will use the trade exception on Oklahoma City Thunder guard Kelly Oubre Jr.

Thompson injury also means that the Warriors won’t be title contenders. The Warriors might not even make the playoffs with Thompson being out. Yes, he did help the Warriors make five appearances in the NBA Finals, but they struggle without him. Last season the Warriors were the worst team in the NBA.

If the Warriors do make the playoffs it will be because of James Wiseman who they drafted Wednesday night. However, the chances of them making the playoffs are slim. The Warriors will continue to struggle with Thompson out.

The Warriors should hope that Thompson is back for the 2021-22 season because things won’t get better if he’s not back.
