Jimmy Garoppolo returned to New England on Sunday for the first time since being traded from the Patriots to the San Francisco 49ers. The scarlet and gold had a field day against their quarterback’s old team, picking up a 33-6 win and improving to 4-3 on the year.

San Francisco tallied three touchdowns and a field goal in the first half, turning the ball over once. Meanwhile, the Patriots hit a field goal but lost the ball four times (two interceptions, two punts).

New England opened the second half with a quick field goal, but that was where there scoring ended. Newton was picked off for a third team, prompting Bill Belichick to insert Jarrett Stidham into the game. He also threw an interception upon entering. The 49ers added 10 points in the second half of their obliteration of the Patriots.

San Franicsco won, but it did come at a cost. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to miss roughly two weeks. Meanwhile, running back Jeff Wilson Jr. suffered an ankle injury and is being placed on IR. The 49ers’ IR now features three running backs in Wilson, Raheem Mostert, and Tevin Coleman. This leaves JaMycal Hasty and Jerick McKinnon as the two main men in the Niners’ backfield.

Statistics

New England’s offense had no bright spots, though Damien Harris did show promise with 10 carries for 58 yards. Jakobi Meyers caught four passes for 60 yards while Rex Burkhead added 47 scrimmage yards. Cam Newton completed nine passes for just 98 yards and three interceptions while Jarrett Stidham threw for 64 yards and one pick.

Garoppolo completed 20 passes for 277 yards, but he could not find the end zone and was intercepted thrice. 42 percent of Garoppolo’s passing yards were accounted for by Brandon Aiyuk, who caught six passes for 115 yards. Deebo Samuel added 65 yards and George Kittle provided 55.

Jamar Taylor intercepted two passes while Emmanuel Moseley and Fred Warner also picked off one pass each.

What’s Next?

The 2-4 Patriots travel to Buffalo for a clash with the Bills next Sunday. While Buffalo has impressed, they did show signs of weakness against the New York Jets, winning by just one score over Gang Green.

San Francisco is also greeted with a tough matchup as they face the Seahawks in Seattle. However, similar to the Bills, the Seahawks appeared to struggle in Week 7, picking up their first loss of the season against Kyler Murray and his Arizona Cardinals.
