The underdog Dolphins came out swinging against the Jaguars, opening up a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick made a statement, connecting on 18-20 passes in an efficient offensive showing for the Dolphins. He connected with Preston Williams for their first touchdown, followed by a rushing touchdown for running back Jordan Howard.
The Dolphins wound up with a 31-13 victory in a game they controlled from start to finish. Fitzpatrick wasn’t just in the zone passing, as he added 38 rushing yards and a touchdown in the win. His favorite target, DeVante Parker, led the team in receiving with 69 yards on five catches. In addition to Williams’s early receiving touchdown, tight end Mike Gesicki caught a touchdown from Fitzpatrick.
Gardner Minshew and the Jaguars offense struggled to keep up from the start. Minshew went 30-42 for 275 yards, including one interception and zero touchdown passes. He took four sacks on the night, compared to just one for his defense. James Robinson led his team in both rushing and receiving in the game, racking up 46 yards rushing on 11 carries (two touchdowns), and reeling in six of six targets for 83 yards.

What’s Next
The Jaguars will look to bounce back against the Cincinnati Bengals next week at home. They go from facing the veteran Fitzpatrick to the rookie Joe Burrow. In order to turn things around, it will be important to generate a pass rush that was non-existent against the Dolphins. Further, they must avoid an early deficit as they faced in Week 3, which led to Minshew throwing 42 times. He’s a young, late-round quarterback, and his team must put him in a position to succeed if they want a chance to win games.
On the Dolphins side, they will look to earn back-to-back wins next week when they face the Seattle Seahawks on the road. Generating a consistent run game will be crucial in that matchup, as Fitzpatrick can’t be expected to play the efficient kind of game he played Thursday night. It’s clear this team has a new energy about them this season, and they shouldn’t be overlooked moving forward, even against strong opponents like the Seahawks. If they can get the ball moving on the ground consistently and ride some of the defensive momentum they picked up Thursday, they can hang around in their Week 4 game in Seattle.
