The Philadelphia Eagles (0-2-1) went on a late fourth-quarter drive to tie the game against the Cincinnati Bengals (0-2-1) on Sunday. Neither team could muster a score in overtime and the two franchises fought to a 23-23 result in Week 3.
The seesaw battle saw neither team take control in the first half, regardless of a few big plays by both. Philadelphia took the lead on a 29-yard touchdown from Carson Wentz to Greg Ward just before the half to give them a 13-10 advantage going into the break. As expected, the Eagles got running back Miles Sanders heavily involved against a Bengals defense that had troubles against the run not only in 2019 but as recently as last week against the Browns. They were missing All-Pro Geno Atkins in the middle of the line. Former Bengal Jake Elliott booted a pair of no-doubt field goals before a touchdown by Ward.
Cincinnati had an issue calling plays for the running game, giving just 17 carries to star running back Joe Mixon, despite facing a Philadelphia defense susceptible to the run a week prior. The result was a woeful 2.9 yards per carry as the running plays were clearly telegraphed. For his part, Giovani Bernard had an important run for the second game in a row. Rookie wide receiver Tee Higgins (making his first start) found the end zone twice on the day.
In an ugly game between two winless teams, Wentz tossed a pair of interceptions but demonstrated a lot of mobility as he continually avoided sacks and added a touchdown scramble late in the fourth to send the game to overtime. He finished with 225 yards passing and an impressive 65 yards rushing for the Eagles.
Rookie Joe Burrow continued to display his on-field magic, going over 300 yards for the second week in a row and tossing two scores. Like Wentz, he displayed his escape prowess with some nifty moves to avoid trouble but was not able to avoid the eight sacks allowed by his offensive line. Burrow set a rookie record with 91 completions through three games, overcoming the 84 set a year earlier by Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
Neither team can afford to rest. The Eagles travel to face the San Francisco 49ers (2-1) in Week 4. Cincinnati returns home to host Gardner Minshew and the Jaguars (1-2).
