With their season on the line, the Chicago Bears turned to 2017 first-round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky. Head Coach Matt Nagy preached his confidence for the offense under his fourth-year quarterback during every press conference this week. Trubisky even gave a powerful pre-game speech to the Bears, but all of the words failed to convert into winning action for the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

Recap

For Green Bay, it was a night of offensive records and defensive improvement. Aaron Rodgers became the 11th quarterback in NFL history to throw for 50,000 yards. Rodgers is also the second quickest quarterback to ever reach that mark. Tight end Marcedes Lewis caught his 400th pass and became the seventh tight end in NFL history with 400 catches and more than 200 games played. Wide receiver Davante Adams caught his 500th pass tonight and became the fastest Packers’ receiver to ever reach that mark (95 games) and surpasses the mark in one fewer game than Sterling Sharpe

With all of the records set in the division rivalry matchup, it was no surprise to see Rodgers and the Packers’ offense thriving. With three straight touchdown drives to open up the 1st half, the Packers broke out to a commanding 27-3 after a Mitchell Trubisky fumble was returned for a touchdown by Preston Smith. A Trubisky touchdown pass to Allen Robinson brought the Bears within 17 points, which was the closest Chicago would be in the second half.

After Matt LaFleur preached the importance of the running game all week, the game plan and the stats sheet reflected that emphasis. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams combined for 148 rushing yards on 31 carries. Green Bay used good field position, a balanced offensive attack, and the creative genius of Aaron Rodgers to score 34 offensive points in a convincing 41-25 win.

With Nick Foles inactive, the Bears were forced to return to Trubisky for a must-win game against the leader of the NFC North. Trubisky responded to the pressure by attempting 45 passes, throwing three touchdowns, two interceptions, and fumbling in a costly possession before the end of the first half. Although he only threw two interceptions, both to safety Darnell Savage, Trubisky had multiple key third-down throws that were way off the mark and the Packers dropped multiple interceptions throughout the game.

David Montgomery was very effective in his 11 rushes, but Matt Nagy never had the chance to use his running game with the immediate deficit Chicago faced. Montgomery totaled 103 yards on 11 rushes, including a 57 yard rush on the first play of the game. However, Nagy completed abandoned the running game. He refused to model the game plan that has defeated the Packers consistently in the 2020 season.

Highlights:

Robert Tonyan clinched his 7th touchdown of the season on the deep ball from Rodgers

Allen Robinson was the bright spot, with 2 receiving touchdowns, for a Chicago team that never looked competitive.

Preston Smith returns to 2019 form with a fumble scoop and score to give Green Bay a 27-3 lead.

The Bears fall to 5-6 and no longer control their own destiny on their path to the NFC playoffs. With the last NFC spot currently belonging to the 6-5 Arizona Cardinals, Chicago is still in the hunt. However, with tough matchups remaining against the Texans, Vikings, and Packers, the Bears by no means have an easy path. With questions at quarterback and a defense that was exposed for 34 points, Matt Nagy and the Bears front office are in trouble moving forward.

For Green Bay, they move to 8-3 and solidify their place at the top of the NFC North. The Packers have five games remaining, four of which are against teams with a losing record. Outside of the matchup against the Titans, Green Bay should be confident about their chances of securing the top playoff position in the NFC. The Packers will play the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday afternoon. They will try and take advantage of another team with a quarterback controversy.
