Week 1 Recap: Indianapolis Colts vs Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 1 Recap: Indianapolis Colts vs Jacksonville Jaguars: Gardner Minshew

This game was expected to be a blowout following the purge the Jaguars made on their roster. Surprisingly, Jacksonville kept it close behind Gardner Minshew‘s arm and a plethora of mistakes made by Indianapolis.

Minshew kept up his success from last year going 19-of-20 for 173 yards and three touchdowns. James Robinson got the start at running back for Jacksonville and rushed for 62 yards on 16 carries. The Jacksonville receiving core, led by DJ Chark helped Minshew out immensely and included rookies, Laviska Shenault and Collin Johnson factoring in at key moments. Keelan Cole had a wide-open touchdown grab to tie the game in the second quarter. Andrew Wingard and CJ Henderson both had excellent plays for the young, seemingly horrendous secondary.

For Indianapolis, this was a disaster. Early on in the first half, Marlon Mack went down and could be lost for the season. Nyheim Hines scored two touchdowns in his absence but it wasn’t enough. The defensive line that was supposed to take care of a mediocre offensive line and the secondary looked abysmal against Minshew and company. Philip Rivers made costly mistakes, eventually leading to ten points for Jacksonville. Rodrigo Blankenship missed a field goal in the game and the Colts turned the ball over on downs inside the 5. T.Y. Hilton dropped two key passes in the game and Rivers missed Jack Doyle on what would’ve been an easy touchdown.

Highlights

The Colts had a lot of moving pieces and will now have to rely on the duo of Jonathan Taylor and Hines for seemingly the rest of the year, including next week against Minnesota. Jacksonville seemed to get into a groove with Minshew and Robinson and will look to continue their success against Tennessee next week. These teams should look much different when they play again in Indianapolis in week 17.
