Week 1 Preview: Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots

The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots are set to face off on Sunday in a sure-to-be-entertaining Week 1 clash of AFC East rivals. Newly-signed quarterback Cam Newton will look to lead the Patriots to victory in their first game post-Tom Brady while the Dolphins, led by Ryan Fitzpatrick, hope to see success after a busy offseason of drafting and signing.

The last time these two teams faced off was Week 17, when Miami pulled off a huge upset in New England, immensely impacting the Patriots’ playoff scenario.

For New England, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, wide receiver Julian Edelman, and defensive end Chase Winovich all popped up on the practice report with limited tags but are expected to be good to go on Sunday. Meanwhile, linebacker Cassh Maluia (knee), tight end Dalton Keene (neck), and wide receiver N’Keal Harry (shoulder) are listed as questionable. Fellow receiver Gunner Olszewski (foot) has been ruled out for Week 1.

On the other side of the field, Miami approaches kickoff with a less stressful injury report. Eight Dolphins players appeared on the injury report this week, but seven were able to shed their injury designations. The lone outlier is defensive back Clayton Fejedelem (pectoral), who is listed as doubtful.

Betting Odds

Point Spread: Dolphins +7 (-120), Patriots -7 (-103)
Moneyline: Dolphins +260, Patriots -305
Over/Under: 41.5 (-110)

The Dolphins should be able to cover, making their plus-seven designation quite an attractive investment. Meanwhile, the over looks intriguing, though it could be closer than expected.

Prediction

The Patriots enter as favorites, but the seven-point spread isn’t enough to bank on New England entirely. While they should win, expect Miami to keep it close, especially under the leadership of playcalling mastermind and Bill Belichick protégé Brian Flores. Miami will play solid football, but in the end, the Patriots will secure the victory.

Final Score: Patriots 24, Dolphins 22
