Week 1 Preview: Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs kick off the 101st NFL season tonight as they host the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs’ road to repeating as Super Bowl champions begins tonight as they unveil the Super Bowl banner and take on the Texans. The last time these two teams squared off was in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last year.

In that game, the Texans jumped out to an early 24-0 lead early in the second quarter. However, the Chiefs turned it around and would score on five straight possessions to take a 35-24 lead. They held on to win, outscoring the Texans by a score of 51-7 the rest of the game to defeat Houston by a score of 51-31, moving on to the AFC championship.

The Chiefs had a terrific offseason. They signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes, defensive tackle Chris Jones, and tight end Travis Kelce to contract extensions. The Chiefs also locked up head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach to contract extensions as well. Kansas City made a move in April, too, selecting running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Texans had a questionable offseason to sat the least. They started out by trading away All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson. They did complement that trade, though, acquiring wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Los Angeles Rams.

Betting Odds

Point Spread: Chiefs -9.5

Moneyline: Chiefs -420, Texans +350

Over/Under: 53

In January’s matchup, the Chiefs won by 20 points, covering the spread. They are favored again by 9.5 tonight. Last time, the Chiefs and Texans combined for 82 points. With the high-caliber quarterback play for both teams tonight, anticipate the over to hit.

Prediction

In tonight’s game, expect Mahomes to come out slinging the ball early to get the Chiefs on the board early while getting Clyde Edwards-Helaire involved in both the ground game and through the air.

Deshaun Watson and the Texans are looking to get out to an early lead, much like they did in the Divisional Round. However, the offensive line and defense are going to struggle.

The Chiefs will start their road to repeat with a win over the Texans as Mahomes throws for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, leading them to a lopsided victory.

Watson looks to avenge the loss and start out the season strong with a new arsenal, while Mahomes and co. look to start the year in the win column.

The Chiefs have returned 19 of 22 Super Bowl starters and are in great condition to win their fifth straight AFC West title. That journey begins tonight.

Final Score: Chiefs 38, Texans 17
