Washington Football Team to Use Temporary Name in 2020

The NFL team in Washington will use a temporary name for the 2020 season after retiring their old name.

The team announced on Thursday that it will call itself the “Washington Football Team,” effective immediately.

Washington Football Team isn’t the new name of the team, but rather the name that will be used until the adoption of a new moniker. The process of retiring the former name continues and the team hopes to have the former name gone on physical and digital spaces by the time the regular season starts.

Washington will still use the burgundy and gold colors and the logo on the helmets will be replaced by the players’ number in gold, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The stitching above the number on the jerseys will read Washington.

“The decision to use ‘Washington Football Team’ for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input,” the team said in a press release. “To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.”

Washington owner Dan Snyder had refused for years to change the team’s “Redskins” name, which is considered offensive to Native Americans. However, pressure from sponsors forced Snyder and the team to review the name, and they decided to change it.
