UMass Lowell Nipped by CCSU, 76-73

UMass Lowell dropped to 1-5 over its past six games with a 76-73 loss to Central Connecticut State on Saturday.

With 1:29 remaining, UML’s Ryan Jones stepped to the line with a chance to even the score. However, he was only able to get one free throw to go, as CCSU’s Tyler Kohl hauled down the board and went coast to coast, extending its lead to 74-71.

UML (6-6) 37 36 73

The River Hawks would counter with a Jahad Thomas layup, bringing them within one, 74-73, with 65 seconds left. On the Blue Devil’s next trip down the court, Austin Nehls would come up empty on a 3-pointer, but Eric Bowles was there for the offensive rebound,  forcing UML to eventually foul Nehls.

After one make, the River Hawks, trailing 75-73, would turn the ball over with six seconds remaining, all but squashing their comeback chances.

Kohl’s free throw made it a 76-73 contest, and that’s where it would stand.

CCSU shot 50 percent to UML’s 42.6 in the win.

Next up for UML is a trip to Wisconsin to battle the Badgers (6-7) next Saturday at 4 p.m.

Out of about 100 people who responded, 72 of them said that college athletes should not be paid. This sample included people who had played and who were passionate about college athletics, people who were recently out of college and people who have been graduated for a long time. I personally voted that they should be compensated for their image being used for marketing or recruiting and in a way, they are with scholarships. But we all know that scholarships can only help so much.
