There has never been a better time for a WNBA expansion than now. With talented rookies like Cierra Dillard and Megan Gustafson cut from WNBA rosters this season, it is clear that the league needs to expand in order to ensure that talented players have a place to play. Making a WNBA team’s roster is an extremely difficult task, especially when there are only twelve teams.
In the first month of Cathy Engelbert’s new position as WNBA commissioner, the league’s fans have taken to social media to let her know that the time is now for expansion. Players and coaches have also jumped in with hopes that their voices will be heard. With players, coaches, and fans continuing to expressing the urgent need for the WNBA’s expansion, could one of the top markets for a team be Toronto?
Toronto is a major city in a country that produces fantastic women’s basketball talent. Kia Nurse (New York Liberty) and Natalie Achonwa (Indiana Fever) are two Canadian players who are finding much success in the WNBA as well as on Canada’s Women’s National Basketball team. It is important to note that Canada currently has one of the top women’s basketball teams in the world, ranked in the top ten at number five in the recent 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
Toronto is also home to the Toronto Raptors, Canada’s only NBA program that is currently on the verge of winning its first NBA Championship. With the basketball culture already alive, well, and growing, a WNBA team in Toronto would be well supported not just by the city’s fans basketball fans, but from the fans of an entire nation.
