The 2020 Olympic Games, set to be run from July 24 until Aug. 9 in Tokyo, have been postponed until a later date that is to be determined.
In an interview with Christine Brennan of USA TODAY, International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound stated: “On the basis of the information the IOC has, the postponement has been decided.” He added that while the event may be postponed, “the parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24th, that much I know.”
This is likely due in part to the fact that just a day earlier, both the Olympic and Paralympic teams for Canada would not go unless the Games were rescheduled out of the summer. An official statement from the Canadian Olympic Committee stated: “The COC and CPC urgently call on the International Olympic Committee, and the International Paralympic Committee, and the World Health Organization, to postpone the games for one year”
It is unclear at this time whether the Olympics will be pushed back to 2021, or remain in 2020.
