Here is my weekly article looking back at the history of the upcoming week in sports.

January 19

1974 – UCLA’s men’s college basketball’s 88-game winning streak ends with a loss to Notre Dame, who ironically is also credited with ending the longest winning streak in college football history.
2002 – The infamous Tuck Rule game with an obvious Tom Brady fumble … or so it seemed. This was ruled an incomplete pass against the Raiders.

January 20

1980 – Steelers defeat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV, 31-19. Terry Bradshaw is named MVP.
1985 – The 49ers defeat the Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX, 38-16. Joe Montana is named MVP.
1989 – Mario Lemieux becomes the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in less than 50 games (44).
1991 – The Bills defeat the Raiders in the AFC Championship, 51-3. Meanwhile, the Giants defeat the 49ers, 15-13, in the NFC Championship.
2000 – The final pass of Brett Favre’s career with the Packers ends with an interception, allowing the New York Giants to advance to the Super Bowl on a Lawrence Tynes field goal.

January 21

1979 – Steelers defeat the Cowboys in Super Bowl XIII, 35-31. Terry Bradshaw is named MVP.
1989 – Wayne Gretzky passes Marcel Dionne to move into second place on the NHL scoring list.
2010 – Kobe Bryant becomes the youngest player to score 25,000 career points.

January 22

1973 – George Foreman TKO’s Joe Frazier in the second round to win the WBC and WAN Heavyweight Titles. Frazier was knocked down six times in the two rounds.
1984 – Raiders defeat the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII, 38-9. Marcus Allen is named MVP.
1987 – During a blizzard in New Jersey, only 334 fans attend the Devils’ 7-5 win over the Flames.
1988 – Mike Tyson TKO’s Larry Holmes in the fourth round to remain the undisputed champion.
1989 – The 49ers defeat the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII, 20-16. Jerry Rice is named MVP.
2006 – Kobe Bryant scores 81 points against the Raptors.
2012 – Famed Penn State coach Joe Paterno passes away at 85.

January 23

1983 – In the infamous “Mud Bowl,” the Dolphins defeat the Jets, 14-0. The field conditions eliminate the Jets’ advantage entirely.
1998 – The Denver Nuggets tie the NBA record for consecutive losses (23).
1998 – Michael Jordan scores double figures for the 800th consecutive game in the Bulls’ win over the Nets.
2000 – The Titans defeat the Jaguars in the AFC Championship. The Titans were the culprit for all three of Jacksonville’s losses that season.

1982 – The 49ers defeat the Bengals in Super Bowl XVI, 26-21. Joe Montana is named MVP.
1990 – Lakers coach Pat Riley becomes the fastest coach in NBA history to reach 500 wins.
2018 – Former U.S. Olympic doctor Larry Nassar is found guilty of molesting over 150 girls/women. He is sentenced to 150 years in prison.

January 25

1924 – The first Winter Olympics are held in France.
1981 – The Raiders defeat the Eagles in Super Bowl XV, 27-10. Jim Plunkett is named MVP.
1987 – The Giants defeat the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, 39-20. Phil Simms is named MVP.
1989 – Michael Jordan scores his 10,000th career point in just his fifth season.
1998 – The Broncos defeat the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII, 31-24. Terrell Davis is named MVP.
2003 – Serena Williams defeats her sister, Venus, in the Australian Open. She captured her fourth straight Grand Slam title.
