In what was suppose to be a strength for this New England Patriots team, has been its downfall thus far.
Quotes are being spat out by players and coaches alike that the team needs to work harder and come together to improve.
“We just got to play better. Coach better. Just wasn’t good enough today,” Head coach Bill Belichick said. “We need to do a good job in every area.”
The words said by the coaches trickled down to the players including cornerback Stephon Gilmore who took to an interview. with ESPN to say that he feels it’s on him.
“It’s frustrating when it’s communication, it’s not really ability. I have to get better at the communication part. It’s my fault on the communication,” Gilmore said,
Patriots safety Devin McCourty had a few less words to say telling reporters what he felt and didn’t beat around the bush.
“It’s bad. We’re letting the team down,” McCourty had said during an interview after the game.
All educated and common sensical human beings can tell you that just saying that something’s bad and needs to be fixed isn’t going to cut it.
The defense is damaged and flawed and it may be beyond their control. The Patriots are giving up an average of 32 points a game which is on pace for an all-time team season record.
The 456.8 yards per game given up by the defense is indeed dead-last in the NFL and are 50 yards away from the next ranked Indianapolis Colts.
You can defend the stink bomb that the Patriots put on against the Kansas City Chiefs opening night. You may be able to defend giving up over 300 yards to the elite quarterback Drew Brees and the high-powered New Orleans Saints.
But the team will not get a dismissal with what has happen these past two weeks with Houston and Carolina.

Why are you assuming the Patriots defense will just stay in stasis and thus let itself get cut to ribbons? The issues are assignment issues – players (more than just Gilmore) abandoning their assignments. Those are the most correctable problems in the game.
