The Minnesota Timberwolves Firing Gersson Rosas Makes No Sense

The Minnesota Timberwolves Fired Gersson Rosas

The Minnesota Timberwolves dismissed President of Basketball Operations, Gersson Rosas, just days before the beginning of the team’s training camp. Sachin Gupta is expected to be promoted to interim head of basketball operations, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Minnesota released a statement announcing the news but didn’t explain why they made the move. “Today, the Minnesota Timberwolves parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. As an organization, we remain committed to building a winning team that our fans and city can be proud of.”

Why Now?

Perhaps part of the reasoning behind the move is the transition of ownership from Glen Taylor to Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore. However, the timing still makes no sense. The season starts in a month and Minnesota allowed Rosas to build the team just to let him go before the season starts. He was even in the building holding meetings on Wednesday morning before being fired.

Even Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t understand the move.

Rosas’ Timberwolves Resume

Rosas executed some large moves to try and improve the team during his tenure in Minneapolis. He acquired D’Angelo Russell from the Golden State Warriors during the 2019-2020 season before drafting Anthony Edwards with the first pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, it looks like the selection of Edwards was the correct pick. He averaged 19.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in his rookie season.

From the 2019-20 season to the 2020-21 season, the Timberwolves improved their win total by four games in a shortened season.

This offseason, Rosas continued to try and improve the roster. Rosas acquired Patrick Beverley from the Memphis Grizzlies and Taurean Prince from the Cleveland Cavaliers, among other moves. The Timberwolves also expressed interest in acquiring Ben Simmons from the Philadelphia 76ers.

So Rosas made these moves, which included making one of the most important draft selections in franchise history, but doesn’t get to see this year’s team through?

It would be understandable if the Timberwolves went in another direction at the end of the season if things don’t go well. It just doesn’t make sense for Minnesota to let Rosas bake the cake but not see if the customer thinks it tastes good.
