The Greatest Team of All Time: The First Round

Every year, the NFL crowns its champion in February. Sometimes, this team may be the best team in the league in a given year. Other years, the champion team might have gotten a fluky game or two as they were generally not the best team in the NFL that season. Through the simulation, the greatest team of all time should expose themselves. However, due to its nature as a simulation, the games in ensuing articles are only a guess through mathematical predictions.

Group A:

The ’96 Packers got off to a hot start, securing a pair of sweeps and a split with the ’83 Raiders who also advanced.

Coming down to the wire, the Giants required a win over the lowly Chiefs to secure passage into the bracket. Phil Simms and the Giants offense trailed by 11 with nine minutes left. Simms quickly fired a pair of touchdowns, leaving the Giants a stop away from the finals. On the final drive, the Chiefs orchestrated a 48-yard run on a draw, pushing the Chiefs deep into field goal range. As the Chiefs siphoned time off the clock, the Giants used their final timeout. Moments later, Len Dawson tossed an interception to Perry Williams, clinching a second place finish for the Giants.

Heading into the final matchups of the first round, the Giants held a narrow lead over the Steelers due to a point differential tiebreaker. As the final simulations came in, the Steelers defeated the Broncos 28-21 before the Cowboys dispatched the Giants, leaving them out of the final round.

A group with three of the greatest defenses of all time did not disappoint as no team averaged 15 points per game. The Dolphins and Patriots locked up passage to the next round with 20-0 and 16-10 wins over the Buccaneers and Ravens respectively in the final round of round robin play.

After an initial hiccup by the 49ers, the Patriots and 49ers swept the remainder of the field all while splitting their two games and making it to the finals.

Heading into round five, the Patriots had a stranglehold on the group, pushing out to four straight wins. In round five, the Steelers beat the Patriots in Foxborough by 35, creating a wonky point differential. The Panthers held off the Patriots, ending the Giants hopes of progression.

The Packers set a new standard for ineptitude, posting only one performance in double figures. As the Chargers euthanized the Packers, locking in the first seed of the group, the Bears and 49ers battled for the second spot. The Bears won convincingly, 27-9.

After the ’71 Cowboys clinched the top seed by round five, the other three teams were pitted in a situation to clinch the final spot in the knockout round. With all three teams sitting at a pair of wins and a trio of losses, the 49ers clobbered the ’71 Cowboys by 22, giving an insurmountable point differential to the Bills who only could sneak out a seven-point against the ’92 Cowboys.
