New York Jets +120 at Atlanta Falcons (London)
This is a 9:30am EST game, so go lock it in right now. I’ll wait.
New York looked horrible to start the season after dropping games to Carolina, New England, and Denver. Then, Zach Wilson and company got it together against an undermanned Tennessee Titans squad, winning 27-24 in Week 4.
Coincidence? Maybe, but Gang Green gets a team missing their playmakers through the air for the second week in a row. Without Calvin Ridley (personal) and Russell Gage (ankle) available, you cannot expect Cordarrelle Patterson to do it all for Matt Ryan. Meanwhile on the other side, the Jets add Elijah Moore to Jamison Crowder and Denzel Mims in the passing game. Running back Michael Carter is the man in the backfield (finally!) and New York goes nuts on Atlanta across the pond.
Book it: Jets money line (+120) win outright
New Orleans Saints -2.5 (-110) at Washington Football Team
There is absolutely no reason to think that the Saints won’t continue their trend of on again, off again. Washington’s defense has been embarrassing thus far, and New Orleans (2-2) has two victories by a combined score of 66-16. Woof. The Taysom Hill show was unveiled last week, and you can expect more of the same against the team in our nation’s capital searching for some sort of defensive identity.
The New Orleans pattern is not completely random, and they stay true. They’ll continue it with a double-digit victory over Taylor Heinicke and the Football Team as they head into the bye at 3-2, feeling pretty good. New Orleans could win by a field goal and leave bettors happy, but I don’t think it will be that close. This is a two-unit bet, so lock it in.
Book it: Saints cover -2.5 points (-110)
Houston Texans +8.5 (-110) vs New England Patriots
In our weekly expert picks article, I chose the Pats to blow out Houston coming off the home loss in Tom Brady’s return to Foxborough. A few things have changed since then. First of all, no matter how bad the Texans are, a near-10 point spread is nothing to sneeze at, especially when one considers that, well, the Patriots are not good. Oh, and did I mention that pretty much the entire offensive line is missing this game? Yikes.
Even coming off of a loss, this is a trap game. The Pats assume they will win, but the Texans are still a professional football team. New England may still win on the strength of Damien Harris running the ball, but it might require a late stand by the defense. This has “underdog cover” written all over it, I don’t care if it’s Davis Mills or Sammy Davis, Jr at quarterback for Houston.
Book it: Texans cover +8.5 points (-110)
MLB BONUS: Houston Astros at Chicago White Sox o8.5 (-110)
What fun is postseason baseball if you’re not rooting for the over? I’ve got the perfect matchup for you. Dylan Cease has been outstanding for Chicago this season, with 13 wins and an outstanding 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Cease has also hit nine batters this season, thrown 13 wild pitches, and holds a 1.25 WHIP (that’s not good). The fact of the matter is all of those statistics are things that Houston plays right into. They take bean balls, are patient at the plate, and are content with base hits and walks.
The Astros’ Luis Garcia has given up a walk in a whopping third of his innings pitched. The 3.30 earned run average looks adequate on paper, but I’m not certain this is the guy you want on the mound to close out a Game 3. That said, Houston has plenty of time to polish off the series, so they can afford to trot out an also-ran and cross their fingers. A lot of runs will be scored in this game.
