Tennessee Titans vs. Atlanta Falcons: Recap and Highlights

The Falcons hosted the Titans on Sunday, September 29 in Week 4 of the 2019 NFL season.

The Titans were coming off a dismal performance against the Jaguars in hopes of turing this around against Atlanta. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked nine times in that game.

The Falcons came in after a loss to the Colts in Week 3.

After exchanging three-and-outs to start the game, the Titans took over on their own 45-yard line. Mariota hit rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown for what alone would’ve been a nice gain. But Brown had greater plans, taking it 55 yards for a touchdown.

Titans lead 7-0.

The Falcons would respond with a touchdown of their own on a six-play, 85-yard drive. The drive was aided by a pass interference call on Logan Ryan. Falcons running back Ito Smith ran it in from a yard out.

Tied 7-7.

The Titans put together a 13-play, 75-yard drive, with a nice mix of run and pass plays. The drive culminated with an 11-yard pass from Mariota to Brown for his second touchdown of the day.

Titans lead 14-7.

The Falcons’ next drive ended after Tennessee’s Jurrell Casey recorded a trifecta (sack, fumble, and fumble recovery).

After exchanging three-and-outs again, Mariota and the Titans put together another solid drive. They would have to settle for a field goal after Corey Davis dropped a pass on third down.

Titans lead 17-7.

The ensuing Falcons drive stalled after the Titans’ defense stopped Falcons running back Devonta Freeman on a 4th-and-one.

The Titans got the ball and drove the length of the field. Davis would redeem himself for the previous drop and score on a 23-yard pass from Mariota.

Titans lead 24-7.

Falcons kicker Matt Bryant missed a 32-yard field goal before halftime. After halftime, Bryant he would make a field goal from 42 yards out.

Titans lead 24-10.

With the lead, the Titans turned in large part to Derrick Henry to pound the rock and drain the clock. Thanks to Henry, plus the Titans defense standing tall, Tennessee held on for the victory.

Marcus Mariota finished 18-for-27 with 227 yards and three touchdowns while Matt Ryan finished 35-of-53 for 397 yards.

Derrick Henry had 27 carries for 100 yards. Falcons tight end Austin Hooper led his team with nine catches for 130 yards. The Titans’ defense sacked Matt Ryan five times, while Mariota didn’t get sacked once.

The victory moves the Titans to 2-2 on the season. The loss drops the Falcons to 1-3. The Titans host the Buffalo Bills next week in a game that will be full of hype after this win. The Falcons travel to Houston to take on the Texans.
