The Calgary Flames have missed the postseason as many times as they have made it in since their 2004 Cup run. More recently it has been six times in the last ten seasons where they have not made it, and now the Flames enter ’21-’22 off a notable offseason.
The Carolina Hurricanes had a great season in 2020-2021. The playoffs, however, were not so kind to them.
Littered with young offensive firepower, the Florida Panthers finished second in the Central Division a year ago. Winners of 37 games during the NHL’s COVID-19 shortened season, they finished inside the league’s top five in goals for, scoring 189.
The Pittsburgh Penguins finished first in their division last season. However, they sadly lost to the New York Islanders in the first round.
Due to Covid restrictions, the Chicago Blackhawks played in a redrawn division in the Central. While they finished third last with a record of 24-25-7, on a brighter note, they did have a winning home record of 13-11.
The Los Angeles Kings keep on trucking with their rebuild. 2020-21 was headlined by a Jeff Carter trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with a bottom eight finish in the standings. Safe to say the Kings have been in a rut these last number of years.
In their final season at Nassau Coliseum, well, the second final season at the Coliseum, the Islanders went a game further than they did against the year prior. Unfortunately, it was just from game six of the third round to game seven of the same round against the same team, the Lightning.
The past three years have been a roller coaster of emotions for the young Las Vegas Golden Knights. They’ve made playoff appearances in all four seasons and came three victories short of hoisting the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season, losing to Ovechkin and the Capitals, four games to one.
The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the 2020-2021 NHL season as one of the premier contenders across the NHL. Finishing in first place in the all Canadian North Division, the team won 35 games.
As the Philadelphia Flyers head into the 2021-22 season, it’s hard not to think about what went wrong last season. They looked good at the start of the 2020-21 season, and then everything went off the rails.
The Boston Bruins had a great 2020-21 season. Despite losing to the New York Islanders in the second round, fans would still call it a victory.
The New Jersey Devils appear to be on a downward trajectory after finishing 26th in 2019-20 and 29th a season ago. There are a few that might place the blame on the young players.
