Rookie Report & Power Rankings: Week One
The preseason has come and gone, and the regular season is just one day away. That not only means the return of regular season NBA basketball, but also the return of the Rookie Report.

As Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra stated in pregame, this was a “dress rehearsal” for the team. The Heat starters played more minutes, and the team played with a ten-man rotation for most of the game. And it was largely successful, with the team defeating the Orlando Magic 107-98 on Thursday.
Here are my four takeaways from Thursday’s game vs the Magic.
It was a tight race for the Atlantic Division championship last season, and the 2019-20 edition is shaping up to be equally as competitive. Well, except for the New York Knicks… My apologies to the Knicks faithful.
Basketball is finally here. While it’s just preseason, the Miami Heat are off to an impressive start. With that said, here are my four takeaways from the Heat’s preseason win over the San Antonio Spurs.
The regular season is almost here! I personally can’t wait and here at The Scorecrow, we’re going to break down each team based on division. You won’t want to miss these articles. So be on the lookout for your favorite team and what we think about them. This article is going to look at the Northwest Division including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Utah Jazz. This division was interesting last year but during the offseason, some recent moves made it even more interesting. Let’s jump right in!
Nick and Gabe talk about the youth movement in basketball with the young stars on the Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, and Atlanta Hawks. There’s a Media Day roundup that has us ready for the season even more so than we were before. Has Adam Silver gone too far with the new tampering rules and is LaMelo Ball a number one draft pick? Twitter exploded when BleacherReport ranked Curry over Kobe in their All-Time list; one of us thinks this is fair but the other thinks it’s ridiculous.
The NBA season is less than a month away and after all the offseason craziness everyone is itching to see how some of the new-look teams will fare. The Los Angeles Clippers held Media Day for the press yesterday to showcase some of their new players in Clipper threads especially big free agent signings Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The players talked to the media in pairs yesterday here’s what some of them said.
Pat Riley finally landed an all-star this off-season in Jimmy Butler. After landing Butler, the Miami Heat’s focus now is pairing him with another all-star. To aide the Heat in their quest, Heat fans have been taking matters into their own hands through social media.
Gabe flies solo this week but invites Justin Doyle (@JustinRobDoyle) to come on the air and talk shop about the NBA. Justin and Gabe talked Celtics, GOATs, and the state of basketball in Florida so this is an episode you don’t want to miss! We also discuss the western conference and how it could prove to be different than we anticipate. Don’t forget to subscribe, rate the show, and tell your best friend about the podcast!
This episode Nick and Gabe talk about the results from this year’s FIBA tournament and the Kevin Durant’s Wall Street Journal article drama! Also Shaun Livingston and Joe Johnson. We were surprised about Team USA’s performance in the tournament and even more surprised by the championship game. How many of our bad basketball jokes can you hear us say without rolling your eyes? Subscribe and follow us on Social Media!
For the past three seasons, we’ve heard Jimmy Butler get called anything but a great leader. The national media painted Butler as a cancer to teammates, particularly younger players. However, New Orleans Pelicans guard J.J. Redick told Zach Lowe on his podcast that he doesn’t buy that narrative. Despite playing with Butler for less than one full season with the Philadelphia 76ers, the veteran guard had plenty of time to learn about Butler as a teammate.
Is it too farfetched to put all your faith in Kawhi “Fun Guy” Leonard to bring the Los Angeles Clippers their first NBA championship? After all, he was one more errant bounce away in his final shot from losing the series against the Philadelphia 76ers and this wasn’t even the Eastern Conference Finals. I heard many different people say during his free agency that wherever Kawhi goes, a championship will follow but is that fair? Is it fair to put all your eggs in one basket?
