Super Bowl 54: Andy Reid Cements Legacy, Hall of Fame Status

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl 54 on Sunday. The win was special for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who hadn’t won a Super Bowl before Sunday.

It’s hard to believe that Reid hadn’t won a Super Bowl in 21 seasons because he is a great coach. In 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid went to the playoffs nine times. He took the Eagles to four straight NFC championship games, but only won one. The Eagles lost the only Super Bowl that they went to under Reid.

Entering Super Bowl LIV Reid had a 14-14 record in the postseason. The Chiefs wanted to win the Super Bowl for Reid because he deserves to win one.

“He’s one of the best coaches of all time; he already was before we won this game,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was the Super Bowl MVP, said. “But we wanted to get that trophy just because he deserved it. The work that he puts in day in and day out. He’s there at like 3 in the morning, and he leaves at 11 [at night]. I don’t think he sleeps. I’ve tried to beat him in, and I never can. He’s someone that works harder than anyone I’ve ever known, and he deserves it.”

The win in the Super Bowl cements Reid’s legacy as one of the greatest coached in the history of the NFL. It might also have cemented Reid a spot in the Hall of Fame. Reid is seventh in regular-season wins (207) and 19th in winning percentage among coaches who have coached at least 100 games. His teams have won 10 divisional titles. He has been to seven conference championship games.

There have been only three coaches that have taken their teams on more playoff runs than Reid. He is definitely a future Hall of Famer. Even though Reid has nothing more to accomplish after the Super Bowl win, he’s not retiring anytime soon.

I still enjoy doing what I’m doing,” Reid said. “I got this young quarterback over here that makes life easy every day. Every day it’s a pleasure to come to work and know that you have an opportunity to coach him and his teammates. Brett Veach understands what it takes to win but also the kind of people that we enjoy working with, so he brings those kinds of guys in and makes it enjoyable.”

With Mahomes as his quarterback, Reid could win another Super Bowl or two. If he does win another Super Bowl, then he will only cement his legacy as one of the greatest coaches and his status as a future Hall of Famer even further.
