Baseball Hall of Fame player Lou Brock passed away Sunday. He was 81 years old.

Brock’s career spanned 19 Major League seasons, 16 of those for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is one of only 32 players to achieve the 3,000 hits plateau. He held the record for stolen bases with 938 from 1971 through 1991 when he was surpassed by Rickey Henderson. Brock still maintains the number two spot in that category.

The Hall of Fame outfielder began his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1961. He was traded to the Cardinals during the 1964 season.

Brock was a six-time All-Star selection as well as a member of two World Series Cardinals teams. Brock retired from baseball after the 1979 season. That season at the age of 40 he batted .304.

He ended his career with 3,023 hits and a career batting average of .293.

Brock was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985, in his first year on the ballot.

The Cardinals and Cubs observed a moment of silence for Brock before their game on Sunday.
