In a game that was weeks in the making, the Boston Red Sox needed just 12 minutes to finish off the Kansas City Royals on Thursday afternoon. The original game took place on Aug. 7, but 14 days and 14 hours later, the two teams met again to finish what the weather couldn’t permit.

After losing a two-game set to Philadelphia, the Sox looked to right the ship during the quick matinee. The game was halted while Josh Taylor was in the midst of a 2-1 count to Meilbrys Viloria. The Royals subbed in Nick Dini. Former Royals outfielder Billy Hamilton went 2-4 on Aug. 7 but has since been designated for assignment. He was replaced by Bubba Starling. The Royals used two subs in the top of the inning, which Taylor managed to put away Kansas City 1-2-3.

Utilityman Brock Holt hit a one-out RBI single to bring in pinch-runner Chris Owings in the bottom of the 10th inning. The total time of play was three hours and 48 minutes, including a one-hour 49-minute delay. The total time played on Thursday was only 12 minutes. Josh Taylor got the win. Fans under 18 were admitted the game for free, while adults only paid $5, while concessions were sold at a discounted cost.

Both teams did lose a day off to complete the game. Kansas City now travels to Cleveland for a three-game series against the Indians. Meanwhile, Boston had to hop on a flight for a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. They currently sit 6.5 games back behind for the second wild-card spot, with 33 games left to go in the regular season.
