The South Carolina Gamecocks fired head coach Will Muschamp on Nov. 15 after losing three consecutive games and five out of seven contests. Since Muschamp’s release, there have been many names thrown into the mix as to who should replace him. Some of the possible candidates were Hugh Freeze, Billy Napier, and Jamey Chadwell, but Shane Beamer has the job.

Following South Carolina’s loss to Kentucky on Saturday night, multiple outlets began reporting Beamer as the new head coach of the Gamecocks. The official announcement was expected Monday but instead, athletic director Ray Tanner made it public on Sunday afternoon. The formal declaration and introduction is still scheduled for 2:00 P.M. EST on Monday afternoon.

USC Athletics released a statement from Tanner which read (in part):

“I believe that Shane Beamer is the perfect fit to be the head coach at the University of South Carolina. He has worked under some of the greatest coaches in college football and has taken those lessons to become one of the bright, young minds in the game.”

Beamer is a South Carolina native, born in Charleston, and is the son of the legendary college football coach Frank Beamer. The younger Beamer played for his father at Virginia Tech and went straight from playing football to coaching.

He has been part of the coaching staff at Tennessee, Mississippi State, Georgia, and Virginia Tech. Beamer was also part of the Gamecocks coaching staff during the Steve Spurrier era and is excited to return home to South Carolina.
