After another offseason with huge upgrades all across the board, fans of the New England Patriots are buying into the hype and believing that a 19-0 2017 season is inevitable.
Hate to burst your bubble Pats nation but like the title of the article states, an undefeated season WILL NOT happen.
The crew here at Prime Time Sports doesn’t think that it’s completely impossible, it’s just the odds are stacked too much against them doing so and here’s why.
The Feat is so rare and difficult
Team | Wins | Losses | Playoff results | Final result |
---|---|---|---|---|
1934 Chicago Bears season | 13 | 0 | Lost NFL Championship Game against New York Giants | 13–1 |
1942 Chicago Bears season | 11 | 0 | Lost NFL Championship Game against Washington Redskins | 11–1 |
1972 Miami Dolphins season | 14 | 0 | Won three playoff games including Super Bowl VII | 17–0 |
2007 New England Patriots season | 16 | 0 | Won two playoff games before losing in Super Bowl XLIIagainst New York Giants | 18–1 |
Going fully undefeated in a professional sport like football is so rare that only one team has done it and that team was Shula’s Dolphins in 1972. The Chicago Bears also fell short of the mark twice in eight years and who in New England can forget the helmet catch that sealed the third imperfect season in NFL history. Statistics don’t lie and they are not on your side.
You’re the Super Bowl Champions and Everyone is Gunning for You
Winning the Super Bowl is one of the greatest honors in all of sports and comes with great perks like a hometown parade, a new contract or bonus, a ring worth a small country, and lots and lots of television appearances.
But when it comes time to take the field once again, the 31 other teams have set their sights on you.
Teams who have the Patriots on the schedule will look at this game as a measuring stick and as the old saying goes “to be the best, you have to beat the best.” The Patriots are going to get everything but the kitchen sink from all the teams that play them this year and sooner or later, you’re going to fall because taking beatings from teams who will do anything to beat you is as uphill of a battle to get to 19-0 as you can get.
The Schedule does not work in their favor in any way
The late October – early November stretch for the Patriots is to put it simply… Brutal.

Starting with the Falcons, the odds are stacked against the Patriots winning that game as the Falcons are hungry to avenge their heartbreaking loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots then go on to face the playoff caliber Chargers and the AFC elite Broncos, and the Raiders.
To make matters worse, the Patriots have a plethora of divisional match ups as well as a playoff rematch with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This schedule does not mix with a recipe of success and a perfect season.
It’s the last thing the Players are thinking about and even they think it’s ridiculous
Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman scoffed at a possibility for a 19-0 season and according to NFL.com is not having any of it.
“[The 19-0 talk is] stupid. That’s it” Edelman said in short. The wide receiver reaffirmed his stance with an interview with the Boston Herald.
“When you go out and play in the National Football League, it’s one of those things where it’s even stupid to think about that,” Edelman said Saturday at a youth football clinic at Danvers High School. “It’s never been done. You don’t really want to talk about it. My focus is more on trying to get ready for the season, trying to learn your teammates, form your identity.”
The players don’t want added pressure of winning every game in the season and as fans and players know, you don’t have to win them all to make it to the promise land.

Playoff Caliber Chargers? They went 5-11 last year. AFC Elite Broncos? Pick your poison – Paxton Lynch or Trevor Siemian. I’m not saying they’ll go undefeated, but if they don’t, it won’t be due to losses to those teams.
Yes, and you are just another Patriot hater who stated last year it would be absolutely impossible for the Patriots to win the Superbowl and backed up your statements with Bull shit facts! “Oh the stats tell it all” you said! yeah right, next you will be spewing that Pats will not get 6 th ring, fool. go Pats 19-0
The schedule itself makes the task impossible. If you look at the string of difficult games in the regular season and their history, the Patriots will lose at least one game to an AFC East opponent. Defeating the upstart Raiders and the Steelers as well is no small feat.
