The Jets have been very active this offseason as they try to transition from almost a decade of poor play to a winning culture.
Joe Douglas has been very adamant about developing his roster in a way that will bring a very specific culture with professionalism and business. Douglas doesn’t want any antics and if there were any antics, he brought aid for that issue. An example of help would be future Hall of Famer Frank Gore, who will undoubtedly demand a certain level of respect.
One position where the Jets have a glaring need is cornerback. The Jets have depth at the position but lack a shutdown player. A former Titan and Patriots, Logan Ryan is a New Jersey native who can bring that shutdown presence. Ryan played under Bill Belichick, who demands a certain level of professionalism to play under.
The 29-year-old former third-round pick from Rutgers University has been a model of consistency, playing in 109 of 112 possible games since entering the league with the Patriots in 2013. He was signed by the Titans prior to the 2017 season on a three-year deal but announced recently that he will not be returning to Tennessee. He is one of the last few big-name free agents left on the market; despite having great value, he has not garnered much interest.
In 2019, Ryan amassed a career-high 4.5 sacks while playing in all 16 games and making 113 tackles. Ryan additionally hauled in four interceptions and a career-high 18 pass deflections.
This kind of play is what which Joe Douglas may be looking for. A gritty and hard-working playmaker, Ryan would join a cornerback unit that already contains Pierre Desir, Quincy Wilson, Bless Austin, and Brian Poole, Bryce Huff, Lamar Jackson, and Javelin Guidry at the cornerback position.
The main strength of the defense is at linebacker and safety with Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, C.J. Mosley, Avery Williamson, Jordan Jenkins, Patrick Onwuasor, and several others. Looking at that part of the team, they have a very good core and can be competitive. Adding Logan Ryan to the secondary can make the Jets’ defense a top-five. unit in the league if healthy and performing.
Overall, the Jets would benefit greatly from the addition of a player like Logan Ryan.
