Shaquil Barrett Reclaims NFL Sack Lead in Win Over Jaguars

Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett re-claimedd the NFL sack lead (14.5) with a pair of sacks in Sunday’s 28-11 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Buccaneers opened up a 25-0 lead in the first half largely thanks to Barrett’s first-quarter strip-sack (his sixth of the type, which also now leads the NFL) of quarterback Nick Foles that was promptly scooped up by rookie linebacker Devin White for the defensive touchdown. After a defensive offside penalty on the impending extra-point try, the Buccaneers elected to go for two. A successful conversion extended their early lead to 15-0.

Barrett’s big play put the Jaguars in a deep enough hole to derail their normally run-heavy game script resulting in 46 dropbacks to only 17 called runs on the afternoon.

Foles would be benched at halftime in favor of rookie Garnder Mishew to open the second half, but only fared moderately better. Minshew has been named the starter going forward. The Jacksonville quarterbacks combined to complete 23 of 41 passes for a meager 193 yards and one touchdown while surrendering five sacks to the Buccaneers’ defense.

So far this season, Barrett has registered at least a half-sack in all but two games with Sunday’s two-sack performance being his third multi-sack game this season.

It’s awfully hard to say Barrett shouldn’t be in the Pro Bowl with the season he has put together. He recently described a trip to the Pro Bowl as a “dream of mine.”
