The Seattle Seahawks faced the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 27, 2019, in Week 8 of the 2019 season. Here are highlights from the game.
The Seattle Seahawks traveled to Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, to face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8. Entering, Seattle led the all-time series between the two teams, 10-6. They entered at 5-2 after losing to Baltimore in Week 7 while the Falcons were 1-6 on the year.
Seattle would ultimately add another win to the column on both the all-time series and their season with their 27-11 victory over the Falcons.
Seattle received the ball first and finished their opening drive with a 42-yard field goal. In Atlanta’s opening drive, they were unable to put any points on the board, and it was during this possession tat Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner broke the franchise’s all-time tackle record with his 985th tackle. He would add several more tackles to his stats by the end of the game.
In the following Falcons possession, the first quarter ended, and the team attempted to put the first points of the quarter and the game on the board when Matt Bryant kicked a 51-yard goal which went wide left.
The score remained 3-0 with 14:55 on the clock.
Seattle’s first drive of the quarter ended with Russell Wilson connected with D.K. Metcalf for a four-yard touchdown pass, extending the Seahawks’ lead to 10-0.
The next Atlanta drive ended with an interception when a Matt Schaub pass intended for Julio Jones was intercepted by Mychal Kendricks. Seattle capitalized on the interception as Chris Carson took the ball one yard for the touchdown, extending the lead to 17-0 with just under five minutes to play. Soon, Bryant missed another field goal, failing to put any points on the board for Atlanta.
Seattle returned in their final possession of the half with another touchdown pass from Wilson to Metcalf, putting seven more on the board for the 24-0 lead with 27 seconds left on the clock. The final play of the half saw a Falcons fumble thanks to Jadeveon Clowney sacking Schaub. Ziggy Ansah recovered it, ending Atlanta’s attempt to put any points on the board in the first half.
The score remained 24-0 going into halftime.
Atlanta had the first opportunity to put points on the board in the second half, which they did in the first drive when two penalties were called on Clowney for neutral zone infraction, with the second penalty giving the Falcons the automatic first down. Brian Hill rushed the ball 23 yards for the first Atlanta touchdown of the game and the two-point conversion attempt between Schaub and Calvin Ridley was successful.
The opening drive for Seattle was scoreless after Wilson was sacked by Grady Jarrett on third down for a loss of yards, forcing the Seahawks to punt on fourth down. Atlanta returned in their next possession to tack on three more points when Bryant successfully kicked the next field goal from 47 yards out, making it 28-11. Neither team put any points up in their next possessions, and the third quarter came to an end shortly after.
The Falcons’ first possession of the final quarter ended on a first and goal when Devonta Freeman fumbled the ball. It was recovered by Bobby Wagner, who took it five yards. Seattle closed out their first drive of the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal kick by Myers after 10 plays and just under seven minutes of play, extending the lead to 27-11 with 5:03 to go in the game.
Atlanta returned in their next possession to close out the drive following 10 plays with a one-yard pass from Schaub to Austin Hooper. Schaub went for another two-point conversion following the touchdown, but this attempt wasn’t successful and the Falcons only closed the gap by ten points.
It was 27-17 with 3:08 on the clock.
Seattle went three-and-out on their next drive, and the Falcons then put up another three points when Bryant kicked a 37-yard field goal with 1:17 left to play. The score remained 27-20 as Seattle ran time off of the clock to finish out the game on top.
Next week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will travel to Seattle while Atlanta will be on a bye week and will play against the Saints in New Orleans the following week.
