On an awful, wet, and rainy Sunday at FedEx Field, the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins battled it out. Neither teams were able to get their offense going, as the final score ended up being 9-0 in favor of the 49ers. Both teams were scoreless at halftime, but the 49ers were able to make three field goals in the second half, which is all they would need to come out with a victory.
In the first half, both teams’ kickers missed field goals, as both teams were held scoreless. Jimmy Garoppolo had 20 first-half rushing yards to just 10 passing yards.
For the 49ers, their defense shined once again. They held the Redskins’ offense to just 154 all-purpose yards. Keenum was sacked three times, and they only allowed the Redskins to convert three of their nine third-down attempts.
Passing yards were tough to come by, as just a combined 33 passes were attempted between the two quarterbacks. No touchdowns were scored in the game, so obviously there were no passing touchdowns. Case Keenum completed nine of 12 passes for 77 yards and no interceptions. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 12 of his 21 pass attempts for 151 yards and one interception. Garoppolo was able to escape the pocket and do things himself, as he had 20 yards rushing and a couple of drive-saving runs.
Big plays were hard to come by, but in the third quarter on third down and three, Garoppolo found receiver Richie James, Jr. up the middle, and he turned the play into a 40-yard completion. Four plays later, the 49ers struck first and took a 3-0 lead following a 28-yard field goal.
For the Redskins, Adrian Peterson ran the ball 20 times for 81 yards, and Wendell Smallwood ran five times for 23 yards. Steven Sims led the team in receptions with three, but he only had five receiving yards.
For the victorious 49ers, Tevin Coleman ran 20 times for 62 yards, Matt Breida ran just eight times for 35 yards, and Jeffrey Wilson ran five times for 20 yards. Kendrick Bourne led the 49ers in receiving with 69 yards on three receptions.
The 49ers remain undefeated and will host the 4-2 Carolina Panthers next week in a game that will hopefully be more competitive than the matchup between the 49ers and Redskins. Meanwhile, the Redskins are now 1-6 and will head to Minnesota to play the Vikings on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. EST.
