Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon announced on Thursday that he’s retiring at the end of the season.

Gordon told MLB.com that he had contemplated retirement last year. However, he returned with a one-year, $4 million contract this year.

Legacy

In 2005 Gordon was the second overall pick in the draft. He has played his entire 14-year career with the Royals. This season he’s hitting .215 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. Gordon is a three-time All-Star, won seven Gold Gloves, and three defensive player of the year awards. In 2014 he helped the Royals return to the World Series for the first time since 1985. In 2015 he helped them win the World Series.

“No one has ever played outfield defense like he has,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said recently. “He is without question the standard. The example he sets for the younger players simply can’t be measured.”

Entering the weekend series against the Detroit Tigers, Gordon has the third-most walks (682), fourth-most home runs (190), fifth-most doubles (357), and sixth-most games played (1,749) in Royals history. Not having him next year will be a huge loss for the Royals. Gordon is a future Hall of Famer.
