The UNC Tar Heels lost their sixth game of the season on Sunday evening to Georgia Tech by a score of 96-83. This is the first time the Tar Heels have lost six of their first 15 contests in the Roy Williams era, which began in 2003-04. In his post-game press conference, Williams called his current team “the least-gifted team I’ve ever coached in the time that I’ve been back here.”
On his weekly radio show, “Roy Williams Live,” he expanded on his frustration.
“We stunk, okay? We were not very good,” Williams said. “The crazy thing about it is, our team, and we’ve had some very gifted teams, this is not a very gifted team. It’s just not.”
The three-time NCAA champion blamed much of the poor start due to the number of departures for the NBA draft last season, which included first-round selections Coby White, Nassir Little, and Cameron Johnson. The Tar Heels have also been without star freshman point guard, Cole Anthony, due to injury.
It certainly has been a long start to the season for UNC, but that was expected, even if Anthony was still in the lineup. Williams should put some of the blame on himself for lack of recruiting. A good college coach should have a feel for his players, especially those that have the talent to take the next step in their career and jump to the NBA. Williams and his coaching staff should look to sharpen their recruiting skills, or else it could be a long couple years in Chapel Hill.
