Earlier today, the Pittsburgh Pirates thought that they had struck their third deal of the deadline. After dealing Clay Holmes to the New York Yankees for two infielders and Adam Frazier to the San Diego Padres for a trio of prospects, the Pirates had a deal lined up with the Philadelphia Phillies involving pitcher Christian Hernandez and catcher Abrahan Gutierrez. However, medical issues sparked a snag in that deal, which is now off.
Instead, after shaking up the clubhouse and creating some questionable headlines, Jerry Dipoto of Seattle is back wheeling and dealing. He has acquired Anderson to help lengthen out the depth for the Mariners after trading away team leader and closer Kendall Graveman.
Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mariners are acquiring southpaw Tyler Anderson pending a medical review.
The Seattle Mariners are finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Tyler Anderson from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN.
The Pirates thought they had a deal today for Anderson with Philadelphia, but it fell through on medical review. Seattle went and got him instead.

Anderson, 31, has been fairly consistent for the Pirates, compiling 103.1 innings while striking out 86 and walking 25. He has a 4.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 5-8 record through 18 starts.
The Mariners will look to slot the Las Vegas native in their rotation alongside Marco Gonzales, Yusei Kikuchi, Logan Gilbert, and Chris Flexen. The Mariners are also waiting for two promising, young pitchers to heal from injury in Justin Dunn and Justus Sheffield.
The Return
In exchange for Anderson, the Mariners are sending catcher Carter Bins and right-handed pitcher Joaquin Tejada to the Pirates.
Bins, a 22-year-old, was on the roster of Double-A Arkansas. Through 51 games between High-A and Double-A, he slashed .244/.399/.433 with eight homers, 35 RBI, 42 walks, and 67 strikeouts. He didn’t make MLB Pipeline’s top-30 Mariners prospects list, though FanGraphs did rank him No. 28 in the organization.
Tejada, just 18 years old, has allowed four earned runs, one hit, and four walks over five innings of Dominican Summer League action while striking out eight batters. Very little is known about him from a developmental standpoint, but the Pirates evidently feel at least somewhat optimistic in the right-hander’s future.
