Report: Ty Lue Agrees to Become Clippers Head Coach

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to terms with Ty Lue to become the team’s next head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj is reporting that the deal is a five-year contract.

Lue takes over a Clippers team that failed to meet expectations in the 2019-20 NBA season. He served as an assistant on that team under previous head coach Doc Rivers. Rivers has since been hired by the 76ers to serve in the same role.

Lue takes over a team with championship aspirations in year one on the job. While that comes with immense pressure, Lue has proven capable of handling such pressure. During the 2015-16 NBA season, Lue replaced David Blatt 41 games into the Cleveland Cavaliers season. The Cavs went on to capture LeBron James’ only championship with his hometown team.

Lue was fired in his fourth season with the Cavaliers, as the team clearly was heading in a new direction. Prior to that season, he accumulated a 128-77 regular-season record and a 41-20 postseason record as an NBA head coach.

Lue played 14 seasons in the NBA with seven different teams. He also won a championship as a player, as a member of the 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers. Now, 20 years later, he looks to capture a championship with the cross-town rival Clippers.

The Clippers are in championship or bust mode this season. If they fall short, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George may exercise their player options to test free agency next offseason. Given the assets they gave up to pair their two stars together, losing them in free agency would be devastating.

Ty Lue has done it before, but it won’t be easy.
