After trading away one starter earlier, the Minnesota Twins have another pitching deal in place. The club has a deal in place to send J.A. Happ to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for fellow pitcher John Gant, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Southpaw Evan Sisk is also heading to Minnesota.

Happ is a 38-year-old southpaw who has found himself in deadline day rumors before. He’s struggled in 2021, going 5-6 with a 6.77 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and .306 OBA. On a more positive note, he’s walked just 31 batters while striking out 77 over the course of 19 starts (98.1 innings). Perhaps most valuable of all is that he provides the Cardinals with depth and a veteran presence, both of which can be super valuable to fringe contenders down the stretch.

Gant, 28, is 4-6 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and .229 OBA this season. He’s had extreme control trouble, walking 56 batters while striking out 56. After opening the year as a starter and struggling, Gant moved into a bullpen role and has now allowed just two runs over his last seven outings. The six-year MLB veteran is a former 20th-round pick of the Mets. He’ll now head to his fourth organization after also spending time with the the Braves.

Also heading back to the Twins is Sisk, a 24-year-old who was drafted in the 16th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Through 26 relief outings at Triple-A this year, he is 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and .246 OBA. He’s also walked 20 batters while striking out 46.

The Twins will kick in cash to cover the remainder of Happ’s one-year, $8 million deal.
