Report: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Expected to Extend Lavonte David

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to extend the contract of star linebacker Lavonte David, according to Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report.

David, currently the second-longest-tenured Buccaneer behind Demar Dotson, is coming off yet another stellar season totaling 116 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and six passes defended.

The eight-year veteran was once again snubbed for the Pro Bowl in 2019 but was recently elected to the NFL All-Decade team.

While David might not get the recognition he deserves from those filling out Pro Bowl ballots, the league clearly acknowledges the excellence and consistency he has played with throughout his career.

The current coaching staff, too, holds the former Nebraska Cornhusker to a very high regard and views him as a key component to the team’s success moving forward.

“He’s one of my favorite players,” defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said. “I think he’s a complete football player. He plays the run very well. He plays the pass very well. He can blitz. He can play zone. He can play man. He’s very intelligent – he has a lot of football savvy and he understands the game, and that’s priceless. I think Devin [White] has learned a lot from him in that aspect of the game and the team in general on defense he’s one of the leaders over there and I can’t say enough about him.”

David is primed to become just the fourth Buccaneer in history to reach 1,000 career tackles with just one more stop in Sunday’s season finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

Only Derrick Brooks (2,198), Ronde Barber (1,428), and Hardy Nickerson (1,028) have previously achieved the milestone in Tampa Bay.

David currently has just one year remaining on the five-year, $50.5 million contract extension he signed with the Buccaneers in 2015.
