Report: Reds Acquire Brian Goodwin From Angels

The Cincinnati Reds acquired outfielder Brian Goodwin from the Los Angeles Angels prior to Monday’s MLB trade deadline.

Goodwin was removed from the Angels’ lineup ahead of their first pitch against the Mariners due to the trade. The Angels will receive the Cincinnati Reds’ 14th-ranked Reds prospect, left-handed pitcher Packy Naughton, as well as a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Goodwin, who turns 30 in November, was claimed off waivers by the Angels prior to the 2019 season and was a revelation for the club. Goodwin was hitting .242 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in across 30 games for Los Angeles this year. Goodwin will complete his Angels career hitting .258 with 21 home runs and 66 runs batted in during his 166-game tenure in Anaheim. Prior to joining the Angels last season, Goodwin spent three seasons playing between the Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals.

Goodwin will join a Cincinnati Reds club that features outfielders Nicholas Castellanos, Jesse Winkler, Shogo Akiyama, Nick Senzel, and Phil Ervin. Senzel is currently on the 10-day IL and newcomer Akiyama has struggled to adapt to MLB pitching, hitting only .202 in his first 30 games in North America. Expect Goodwin to take playing time away from Akiyama and find himself playing the majority of Reds games in LF down the stretch.

Goodwin will provide the Reds with a versatile outfielder that can play all three positions effectively, contribute solid baserunning, and be under Cincinnati team control through the 2022 season. Outfield superstar Nicolas Castellanos signed a five-year contract with Cincinnati last winter that features player options following the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Goodwin provides the Reds will insurance in the outfield for the next couple of seasons.

The Angels have Mike Trout, rookie Jo Adell, and a two-year, $52 million commitment to left fielder Justin Upton in place, making Goodwin expendable. Angels outfield prospects Brandon Marsh and Jordyn Adams are also expected to impact the Angels’ outfield in the coming seasons. Prospect Jahmai Jones has been recalled immediately in response to today’s trade and will make his major league debut in the San Diego series beginning Wednesday in Anaheim.

Packy Naughton is a 24-year-old left-handed starting pitcher who was the Reds’ ninth-round selection in the 2017 MLB Draft out of Virginia Tech. Naughton split last season between Single-A and Double-A and has good control, striking out 131 and walking only 35 batters across 157 innings. Naughton features a fastball that reaches 94 mph, a slider, and an above-average change-up. Naughton will presumably report to the Angels’ alternate training site.
