Report: Red Sox Offer Free Agent J.D. Martinez 5-Year Deal

The Boston Red Sox reportedly offered a five-year deal to rumored to free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Martinez has been rumored to be one of the top free-agent targets for the Red Sox this offseason. This comes from the fact he would fill the power bat void that exists in the Red Sox lineup and is also coming off one of his best seasons of his career.

He began the 2017 season with the Detriot Tigers before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks midseason. The 30-year-old ended the season batting .303 with 45 home runs and 104 RBI.

Martinez has expressed that he doesn’t want to play as a designated hitter and wants to play outfield. Bringing him aboard would likely mean the Red Sox would need to trade one of their outfielders, and Jackie Bradley Jr. appears to be the likely candidate.
